The Sheldon City Council approved changes to the city's garbage and recycling services, including a rate increase, at its regular session held Wednesday afternoon at the Sheldon Community Services Center.
The council opened a public comment period on the proposed recycling and garbage resolutions and received no objections — neither in person nor in writing. Following the comment period, the council approved a contract amendment and the accompanying rate increase for residents.
In other business, the council awarded contracts for two infrastructure projects: the West Highway 18 and D Street project, and the Wyman and 16th Avenue culvert replacement. The council also passed a resolution accepting easements for the Highway 18 and D Street project, clearing the way for construction to proceed.
The council also discussed a potential Tax Increment Financing incentive for a Beck Engineering building project. City Manager Sam Kooiker recommended waiting on the decision, noting that legislation related to TIF for new buildings had just passed the Iowa legislature but had not yet been signed by the governor. Council Member Tom Eggers agreed, saying he wanted to hear from the state before committing. The issue was tabled indefinitely, with Kooiker noting that tax abatement could serve as an alternative tool if TIF proves unavailable.
The council also heard a presentation about the Surviving Forward Walk, scheduled for May 30th, and gave its approval for the event.
